Sun Life, Khazanah in talks over $750 million Malaysian insurance deal

Sources said Canadian insurance provider Sun Life Financial and Malaysian sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional are discussing to acquire Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd’s insurance business.

Sources said the deal would be valued at approximately 3 billion ringgit ($752.26 million), allowing Sun Life to expand more in Asia while Khazanah would get a strong foothold in the insurance business.

The two companies are planning to make a joint offer for Hong Leong’s 70 percent stake in Hong Leong Assurance Berhad and its 65 percent stake in Islamic insurer Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Berhad, the sources said.
